Tysons Corner History

The Tyson’s Corner area includes Tysons Corner Center which is the country’s11th largest mall and one of the first “super-regional malls” in the United States, drawing customers from Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C.  It is located alongside the Route 495 “Capital Beltway” in Northern Virginia.  The Tyson’s Corner Center anchor stores include Bloomingdales, Nordstrom’s, Macy’s, and Lord and Taylor.   In  2005 an expansion added the AMC multiplex theater.

Tyson’s Corner Galleria Mall , which opened in 1988, is located nearby. The Tyson’s Galleria Mall is more upscale is adjacent to the Tyson’s II office complex.

Immediately after the Tyson’s Corner Center opened, development in the surrounding area accelerated.  What was a sparsely populated suburb of Washington DC with farms and automobile dealerships, now includes numerous restaurants, hotels, office buildings, condos, apartments, and town homes.

Tyson’s Corner is currently the country’s 12th largest employment center.  Three Fortune 500 companies are headquartered Tyson’s Corner.  The current population stands at 17,000, but it’s population swells during the day with the 110, 000 people who work there.   To accommodate the workers and shoppers, Tyson’s Corner has more that 167,000 parking spaces – more than one for every person that lives and works there.  A major re-development project is currently planned that would increase the square footage of Tyson’s Corner five-fold to to as much as 220 million square feet pending approvals.   Developers and other advocates say the proposed project would make Tyson’s Corner, “a great place to live, work, and play.”  They also claim the new Tyson’s Corner would be friendlier to pedestrians and cyclists.

A planned extension of the Metro subway line called the “Silver Line” will have four stops in Tyson’s Corner including one adjacent to Tyson’s Center Mall at Route 123.  The line will eventually be extended to Reston, Dulles Airport, and Ashburn, Virginia in Loudoun County.  Additional development plans in Tyson’s Corner include residential properties, office buildings and an additional hotel.  Silver Line service is expected to begin in 2013.
